SEAN-Japan Center Recognizes Del Carmen’s Sustainable Tourism Efforts & Innovations

Del Carmen, Siargao Islands, Philippines – On April 10, 2025, the ASEAN-Japan Center (AJC) visited Del Carmen’s Mangrove Forest Tourism Program as part of the ASEAN-Japan "Sustainable Tourism Best Practices Sharing" initiative. This visit highlighted Del Carmen’s outstanding efforts in eco-tourism, mangrove conservation, and community empowerment, setting a benchmark for sustainable tourism in the ASEAN region.

A Meeting of Minds: Sustainable Tourism in Action

During their visit, the AJC Tourism and Exchange Team, represented by Assistant Director Naoko Fujikawa and Programme Specialist Reiko Nagaoka, met with Mayor Alfredo M. Coro II, who passionately discussed Del Carmen’s innovative sustainable tourism programs.

Key initiatives shared included:
Preservation of the Largest Contiguous Mangrove Forest in the Philippines – A vital ecosystem for biodiversity and climate resilience.
Community-Based Eco-Tourism Projects – Empowering locals through sustainable livelihoods.
Education & Awareness Campaigns – Highlighting the critical role of mangroves in disaster risk reduction and environmental protection.

These programs reflect Del Carmen’s commitment to balancing tourism growth with ecological preservation, ensuring long-term benefits for both the environment and its people.

Exploring the Iconic Mangrove Forest

Following the discussion, the AJC delegation embarked on a guided tour through Del Carmen’s breathtaking mangrove forest. Local experts shared insights into conservation techniques, wildlife protection, and the forest’s role in mitigating climate change.

The visitors also engaged with community members, learning firsthand how locals contribute to sustainability efforts—further reinforcing the importance of grassroots involvement in eco-tourism.
