Malaysia’s 5G Network Reaches 80.2% Population Coverage, Says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) – Malaysia’s 5G network coverage has reached 80.2% of populated areas as of March 31, 2024, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
The minister highlighted that the country’s 5G rollout, managed by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), is progressing rapidly, with over 11.9 million 5G service subscriptions recorded by the end of March.
Strong Adoption Despite Challenges
Fahmi noted that despite initial concerns over pricing and accessibility, 5G adoption has grown significantly, with subscriptions increasing by 1.2 million in the first quarter of 2024.
“The government remains committed to ensuring affordable and high-quality 5G services for all Malaysians,” he said in a statement.
Transition to Dual Network Model
Malaysia is set to shift from a Single Wholesale Network (SWN) to a Dual Network (DN) model in 2024 to enhance competition and service quality. The transition will begin once 80% coverage in populated areas is achieved and stable.
Fahmi assured that the shift will be seamless, with minimal disruption to consumers and businesses.
Future Plans for Digital Growth
The government is also focusing on:
-
Expanding 5G infrastructure in rural and industrial areas
-
Encouraging 5G innovation in sectors like healthcare, education, and smart cities
-
Ensuring fair pricing for all telecom providers under the new dual-network system
Conclusion
With 80.2% 5G coverage already achieved, Malaysia is on track to become a regional leader in digital connectivity. The upcoming dual-network model is expected to further boost efficiency and consumer choice in the telecom sector.
